Current Status and Trend of Cooling and Lubrication Technology for New Energy Vehicle Electric Drive System

Electric drive system (EDS) is a key component of new energy vehicle powertrain. In recent years, the demand for new energy vehicle products in China has been increasing, and the EDS has been upgraded continuously, which poses a new challenge to the cooling and lubrication technology. Through extensive research on domestic and international EDS product information, the paper introduces EDS’s basic composition and configuration, and the cooling and lubrication integration needs brought about by the highly integrated design. The present situation of the cooling technology and lubrication technology, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different cooling and lubrication methods and their application scenarios, are discussed respectively. Three representative integrated vehicle thermal management technologies are illustrated. Finally, the paper summarizes the current domestic electric drive products mostly use the scheme of drive motor water cooling, reducer splash, and pressure lubrication, and predicts the future trends of EDS to the unified oil cooling development, the wide application of electronic oil pumps and the whole vehicle thermal management technology upgrades, as well as the respective opportunities and challenges faced.
